A Duo

Three Steps Up

Three steps up he sat
steps aged, cracked and painted brown
in the light of a gradual dawn
immobile . . . watching . . .
shadows stretch ‘cross damp, green grass
tiny buds open star-furled eyes
full of dreams
he sat.

Curled at his side an ancient dog
groaned and whined
gently he patted
the matted and grey
time-spiked fur
cold nose nuzzling
scarred hand tender with care.

Three steps up he sat
steps aged, cracked and painted brown
sun’s warmth close ’round him
immobile . . . watching . . .
shadows shorten and fade away
lingering dew disappear
full of dreams
he sat.

Pale, Yellow Moon

A pale, yellow moon sails high in lavender skies
as evening’s stillness settles softly down
drowns out all other nightly sounds.

A pale, yellow moon glistens in autumn’s sleeping sky
passes behind bare skeleton trees
firmly rooted to the ground.

A pale, yellow moon gathers heaven’s stars
wind sighs through crackling leaves
gathering sleeping dreams.
